چکیده

Background: We deciphered thermoregulatory activities of exotic breeds of rabbit in the event of least thermal discomfort in Ibadan, Nigeria. This investigation was carried out between July and August during the least temperature-humidity index (THI). Twenty bucks and 14 doe per breed, housed individually and randomly assigned to experimental units in a completely randomized design, were used for assessment of respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR), rectal temperature (RT) and ear temperature (ET). Measurements were taken between 07.00 to 09.00 h and 16.00 to 18.00 h of the day, using standard procedures. Result: The result obtained showed that the effect of sex was evident in respiratory and heart rates, with males having higher values in the evening. But the core body temperature was not affected. Although the higher function of thermoregulatory apparatus of Fauve de Bourgogne, Chinchilla and British Spot rabbits were recorded, New Zealand White had lower core body temperature than other breeds. Conclusion: We reported that August was the most thermal comfortable period during the year for rabbit in Nigeria. New Zealand White has a lower core body temperature without a compensatory increase in thermoregulatory activities.

Changes in Heat Index Associated with Co2-induced Global Warming

Changes in Heat Index (a combined measure of temperature and humidity) associated with global warming are evaluated based on the output from four extended integrations of the GFDL coupled ocean-atmosphere climate model. The four integrations are: a control with constant levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), a second integration in which an estimate of the combined radiative forcing of gre...

Effect of temperature-humidity index on productive and reproductive performances of Iranian Holstein cows

Calving records from April 1996 to December 2005 comprising 31863 calving events of 1173 dairy cows in a large commercial dairy herd were used to evaluate the effects of heat stress, using temperature-humidity index (THI) on milk yield and composition and reproductive performance of Holstein dairy cows under humid climatic conditions of Rasht in Iran. THI values were grouped into six groups: 30...

Pre-weaning growth performance of hair x mutton sheep crosses and post-weaning growth and physiological reaction in response to different feeding levels and high ambient temperature

Crossbreeding between indigenous and exotic sheep breeds is the fastest method of increasing the performance of sheep in the tropics. The aim of this work was to assess the performance of Cameroon sheep (C) and their crossbreds (Cameroon x Mutton, F1) and (F2 from Cameroon x Milk sheep) under different housing and feeding conditions. The following traits were analysed: Pre-weaning performance d...

Comparing the effect of climate condition on tourism calendar in arid and humid cities using Holiday Climate Index (HCI) (Case Study: Isfahan and Rasht)

Climatic conditions have a major influence in attracting tourists to a city in different months. In this study, the potential of Isfahan and Rasht as arid and humid cities, respectively, was investigated in terms of attracting tourists during a year. For this purpose, the Holiday Climate Index (HCI), which has been designed based on daily climate information, was used. The results showed t...

Evaluation of the Reproductive Potential of Bivoltine Silkworm Hybrids of Bombyx Mori L under High Temperature and High Humidity and High Temperature and Low Humidity Conditions of the Tropics

The challenging task of breeders is to develop silkworm breeds which can produce eggs under prevailing conditions of temperature and humidity. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the reproductive potential of single and double hybrids under high temperature and high humidity as well as high temperature and low humidity conditions of the tropics. The moth emergence percentage, laying re...
